Marsalforn is a composite word. "Marsa" is an Arabic word meaning `port` or `bay.` There is disagreement on the origin of the second part of the word - `forn` -. Forn means "a bakery" in Maltese and Arabic, but it is highly improbable that this has anything to do with Marsalforn, for it is unlikely that a bakery would be built in an area with a small population. It is quite likely that this name, like that of other Gozitan ports, might refer to a type of ship. In that case it would derive from Liburna. an Illyrian type of a ship, which became livurna in Greek, and lifurna in Arabic. The name might also have been derived from forna, a word used by Gozitan fishermen to refer to "a cave hollowed out by the sea". There are several of these in Marsalforn, the best known being Għar Qawqla `the cave at the steep hill` Marsalforn has a history which dates back to Roman times. Until the sixteenth century, the port was the most important in Gozo. Imported food supplies from Sicily were unloaded at Marsalforn, and it was from there that passengers boarded to travel to Licata in Sicily and other continental ports. The importance of Marsalforn had grown so much that by the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century the Knights of the Order of Saint John, the rulers of Malta at the time, considered abandoning the old Citadel in the centre of the island and building a new town overlooking the port. Hostility from the Gozitan people meant that the plans were never realised. They protested that they were too poor to pay the extra tax needed to finance the move and the disruption caused by the transfer of their homes from Rabat to Marsalforn would be too great. With the development of Mgarr harbour, Marsalforn lost its importance and for several centuries, it remained a quiet fishing village inhabited by a small community of fishermen and their families.

Property description

One of Gozo’s most innovative holiday accommodation concepts, Murella Living consists of 24 rooms that have been individually designed in themes that are inspired by Gozo’s classical sights and traditional motifs. Natural wood is used for flooring and furnishings, and each room features a stylishly artistic wall that celebrates Gozo’s classical sights – this could be in raised wood carvings that depict aspects of Gozo such as the salt pans, a bee hive, a bundle of tomatoes, or a prickly pear branch; it could variedly be a mural depicting one of Gozo’s quintessential sights – creations that infuse Murella Living with a sense of place. Yet designer touches are not amiss: the rooms also feature modernist fittings such as designer lampshades, ornate rugs, and bathrooms with funky sinks and minimalist walls finished in resinous render. Service is on a bed and breakfast basis, and the rooms have all the essential trappings – TV, Wi-Fi, airconditioning, mini fridge, toiletries, coffee-making facilities, hairdryer, and so on. All rooms are accessible via a lift, and all have a balcony.

Murella Living is the latest creation of a trio of brothers who have created some of Malta’s most famous brands in entertainment and food – these include the three branches of Café Jubilee, and the traditional delicacies of Jubilee Foods – that have become known for originality, quality, and attention to details. Murella Living will be run in keeping with the high standards that are the forte of Jubilee Group of Companies.

The property is situated a stone’s throw from the seafront in Marsalforn, Gozo’s largest seaside town that holds the largest concentration of bars and restaurants and cafes on the island. Marsalforn boasts various swimming spots; as well as amenities such as supermarkets (just up the road), and a taxi stand and bus stop around the corner..
